What is RCIC?
The RCIC is a preparation course for Baptism for children between 7 years and 14 years of age. They have attained the use of reason at the age of 7 and are of catechetical age, and they cannot be baptised in the name of their parents anymore. Their wish to be baptised has to come from their own initiative, but as they are under 18, they need their parents’ parental permission to do so.
How do I enrol my child?
Please contact the Parish Office to speak to the Catechetical Coordinator, who will send you an enrolment form and arrange a meeting to discuss the details.
The RCIC class starts when a child enrols, so it can start any time of the year with no deadline to enrol. A class has between 4 to 9 sessions, depending on the age of the child. A parent has to be present at all sessions. The sessions usually take place on a Sunday early afternoon during term time, but this can be adjusted. Costs of the full course are: £30 per child.
Regular attendance of the Sunday Mass and the RCIC classes are expected in order to complete the RCIC course. As part of the preparation for Baptism, the child will go to the sacrament of Reconciliation (formerly: Confession) too.
The child needs a sponsor, who is an active member in the Catholic Church, and who will be able assist the child in faith matters during the course, and to be present at the Baptism. If the family is unable to find a sponsor for the child, we will help find a good match within our parish.
